Plastic Surgey in K-Pop: SNSD versus MM
I’m glad to say that I’ve been able to acquire a pretty big circle of friends that are into K-Pop(my J-Pop listener friends list has much filling to be done however). With those friends, the topic of Morning Musume versus SNSD was going to arise one day. When it eventually did, it was a clash of hate comments, member burning, and insulting of the opposite group. I of course defended Morning Musume and from a very honest point of view: Morning Musume is naturally more beautiful than Girls’ Generation.
We all know K-Pop is an orgy of autotune, electronic music, make up and plastic surgery. The same cannot be said about J-Pop(except in some cases like Ayu and Kumi), especially about Momusu.
I begin this comparison with SNSD before and after pics. Let’s face it, the girls right now are all pretty gorgeous(minus Hyoyeon, she will always be butt ugly) but back in the day, I’m talking pre-debut and early debut, the girls were quite fug.
Note: I’m not doing this to hate on K-Pop. You should all know that I’m a huge fan of it. I do it because I don’t want SNSD fans saying that they are prettier than Momusu. If Momusu went through surgery, than they’d out-beauty SNSD by 100%. Without it, they are already prettier.
Recognize her? That there is SNSD’s Tiffany before debut. Some change she’s gone through compared to what she is now am i rite? I don’t think anyone can honestly say that only make up+diet+hairstyle can make her look like this.
Again, not because of plastic surgery am I going to start hating on K-Pop. The infectious music is what I’m there for, not SNSD stans saying that Momusu is just as fake. Of course, a bigger SNSD fan can make a post totally opposite to this, targeting Momusu but I’m doing this out of total honesty and not favoritism.
If it isn’t other than that bitch Jessica(yea, bitch, just like Sayu is). I think her change has been the most drastic. She was clearly very fug back then and is now a total beauty. Anyone who claims she is natural is crazy.
Here they are in some interview for their very first release “Into The New World”. As you can see, they are a lot different than how they look now. It seems that even after they debuted, the plastic surgeries still happened. Seohyun(top right) looks nothing less than a typical azn kid. Yoona(bottom, second to the right) looks like she has down syndrome, Sooyoung(bottom, second to the left) looks completely different. It seems like her head gets smaller by the day. And Tiffany of course with her horse face.
Incomparable to the beauties they are now(except hyo, ofc)
Now let’s look at the Momusu side of things. Unlike K-Pop stars, J-Music groups tend to be more natural. This includes all of H!P. As for AKB48, I’m not so sure.
I’m going to be ignoring 8th generation since they’ve only a few years in the group. Although you can see that Mitsui Aika looks totally natural from before she joined until today(minus new hair and no braces).
Takahashi Ai. That looks like a 7 year difference and she looks exactly the same, minus new hair and transforming into a beautiful young lady. Same nose, same eyes, same face in general.
The self indulged bitch, Sayumi. Even though I hate her guts, I gotta admit that she is amazingly beautiful. Definitely a top 3 most beautiful Momusu member. That was her back in 2004 and her now in 2010. THAT’S 6 YEARS PEOPLE! Same face and even same hair!!! Can’t get more natural than Sayumi.
Now what if some people say that she got surgery before debuting? Well, we’ve seen them during their auditions, plus, what types of parents would let their 13/14/15 year old daughters get plastic surgery, really?
Now I know that plastic surgery is a common thing in South Korea. That doesn’t bother me at all. What bothers me is that SNSD/K-Pop stans start saying that Momusu is just as plastic as SNSD. They only do it as a defense mechanism since both sides know that Momusu is totally natural. If their that ashamed of loving a plastic group, than they shouldn’t be fans to begin with.
Lastly, a picture of Momusu around 3 years ago, when SNSD debuted(August 2, 2007) and comparing them to how they look now.
That’s them in a promo for Onna ni Sachi Are(released July 25, 2007, a month before SNSD’s debut). As you can see, the only differences from then and now are hairstyle differences.
And present day Momusu on the cover of their latest single single, 3 years later after ONSA.
I’m not targeting SNSD fans in general, I have no problems with them. I really like SNSD’s music and they have fun personalities and are all very pretty. My problem are SNSD fans that say that they are prettier/hotter/more beautiful than Morning Musume. Morning Musume, without plastic surgery as they are now, are already prettier than SNSD. Now if undid all the plastic surgery on SNSD, who would really be the ugly ones?
In the end, the only group that is allowed to be “plastic” is Perfume~

Uhm, okay. The predubt SNSd pics you used are very old. The more recent ones are taken from really unflattering angles. It’s a common practice in the kpopland for people to be in training for up to 5-6 years before they debut, unlike the situation they have in H!P where a girl wins an audition, undergoes a 3-4 months of training and bang! she’s ready to go on stage. Some of the SNSD girls look 13-14 in those pics and people’s facial features change a lot in the process of growing up. I’m not saying there was no surgeries at all, but I think they were not as drastic as you make they seem.
Your article seems to be suggesting that MM are superior to SNSD because their beauty is natural, but what about talent? Well, let’s assume that without surgeries SNSD would have been uglier than MM, perhaps it’s true. I’ll still take Taeyeon’s voice or Hyo’s and Yuri’s dancing skills any day over the horror that is Sayu’s voice or Aika dancing in flats and still failing. Even though I’ve been a H!P fan since the 15nin era.
Also, stating that you’re not hating on kpop in one paragraph and calling kpop artists “butt ugly” or “horse-faced” in another does not make much sense. And for the love of jesus, it’s Momusu, not Momosu.

I really do think they are as drastic as they look. Those old pics of Aika and Sayu are from when they were 14. Compared to how they look like today, their the same. You can’t say the same for Jessica for example who looks totally unrecognizable from how she used to. Even during their ITNW days, you can obviously tell that between then and 3 years later(present), there’s been drastic changes(most notably SooYoung).

This is such a coward thing to say. Why don’t you, for once in your life, stand up for what you believe in? Instead of saying to read with a “comedic eye”, and that you’re saying these things jokingly and to not take it too seriously, right when someone brings up a viable argument? How would you feel if you didn’t liek the way your nose looked and you got a nose-job. Then people posted very unflattering before-after pictures of you calling you horse-faced, bitch, and fugly? Now, plastic surgery isn’t bad as a whole, but in my opinion i feel that only people that have been in a situation where they HAVE to have surgery should do it. I mean if you were in an accident or it was life saving or something like that. These days too many people are insecure about the way they look and often try and give in to the publicized perception of beauty, and shallow and insecure people are stupid enough to not love themselves the way god made them and change who they are. Now i think that is just…stupid. Really stupid.
So i will be addressing SNSD. Yes, like i said before this is old news but they are pissing me off. Everyone makes out these girls are beautiful angels with sparkling personalities and that the sun shines out of their butts! Well i have had enough. Now before anyone tells me i am jealous let me tell you one thing. I am not. And that is the honest truth. I would love to be famous and have fans and earn lots of money but jealousy is a sin. And i don’t want to go to hell so i will save myself the trouble. But for all those out there that are so convinced that all their changes are the help of makeup then you need to wake up and smell the coffee because you are either in denial or just plain stupid! Or maybe both. Because makeup is there to hide imperfections, makeup cannot change your facial features. It cannot give you a smaller nose, or complete change your facial structure. It can bring out your eyes, hide spots etc but it cannot make your whole face look like a completely new person. And one other thing that annoys me is this. Yes, as you get older your facial feature do change slightly but your nose cannot completely change shape in the space of five years or so, your eyelids don’t completely change at all. So for all those that are stupid to believe so…you need to stop being in denial and grow up.
Alot of people say ‘many celebs get plastic surgery, i don’t see the big deal’ you are the dumbest people ever. If all celebrities started to shoot each other, would it be okay for me to do just because everyone else is doing it? No! Hell No! Just because alot of people do something doesn’t mean it is right, or any less stupid. Because if i’m being honest, doing something because everyone else does it just shows you are incapable of thinking for yourself, you’re insecure, a follower rather than a leader, self conscious and most probably vain. And all those who say girls who undergo plastic surgery are naturally beautiful or are gorgeous…they’re dumb. Because everyone in the world can be considered beautiful if they went under the knife and dictated how they should look. People lose limbs, suffer from deformities and stupid people like SNSD think that plastic surgery in order to enhance their so called beauty is needed and important. Appearance isn’t everything. But going back to those that lose limbs etc, they are the ones who would benefit from surgery in order to change their lives, to save their lives. When there are people like that suffering like that in the world how can anyone think that a bump on their nose or the broadness of their nose is such an imperfection that they need to change it. People that lose arms etc would love to trade a broad nose to have their arm back, they’d probably love to have small eyes if it meant they could get their leg back. I pity those of you that think that becoming a plastic Barbie doll is the only way to be seen as beautiful. Because what i see is pathetic people who are so self orientated that they feel they have to be beautiful on the outside to be someone. And don’t you dare blame the industry. They cannot physically put you under the knife and hold you down and do the surgery. They could threaten you etc, but if you had a backbone you would tell them to piss off and go elsewhere.
SNSD are supposed to be role models for young girls, so the impression they are giving them is that they can change their features to be pretty and that’s okay, because you can hate the way you look but be altered by surgery. They are almost advertising surgery as a good thing and that kids can fix their imperfections so it’s okay. Who should be happy with the way they look? They should just be plastic!
And you’re probably asking why i care so much? Well i am going to tell you. There are some really naturally beautiful girls out there that are insecure due to the way these celebs look, and may be influenced to look a certain way. Well i say don’t do it. Yes, you may want Jessica’s nose, or Sunny’s eyes, but is it really worth it. Surgery doesn’t change who you are at all. It changes what you look like. But every time someone tells you that you are gorgeous you will be reminded each day that you aren’t gorgeous, the surgery is gorgeous. And that’s not good. Everyone in their own way is gorgeous and teens of today don’t need to give in to this media perception of beauty, with a straight nose, white skin, big bright eyes etc, because who determines beauty anyways? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And if one person in the world has ever said you’re beautiful then you probably are. And that goes for the NATURAL SNSD as well. They may not have had such a good debut if it wasn’t for surgery, but i would support and respect them alot more if they stuck to how they looked before. Natural beauty is something to be proud of, not artificial beauty. Anyone can be plastic-pretty, but not everyone can be naturally pretty. But SNSD have on more than one occasion referred to themselves as pretty. Yeah, pretty conceited. Saying that you are pretty is just big headed even if you are, you just don’t say it. And being proud of the way you look is great but you don’t need to flaunt it and say it about yourself. Modesty is good sometimes. SNSD can sing and dance and are talented. I just wish that they were talented in the common sense department. Because no matter what anyone says i cannot see a reason why plastic surgery is necessary for those that haven’t suffered some form of deformity or accident. You may always want to look a certain way, but it is more impressive to walk around with your head held high with your natural self and not care what people say. At least you can say, i am me and i don’t care how i look. I am strong enough to love the way i am and live life being proud of my own strength to stick to the way i am. And in my eyes that is more impressive than having enough money to change yourself. Alot of people are very self conscious and i understand that, but trust me changing yourself doesn’t give you confidence at all. It may feel like it, but you always had that confidence inside of you just waiting to come out.
So basically what i am trying to say is that don’t think that cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery is the answer to your problems because it’s not. It’s flattering on your face, but doesn’t flatter your personality.
Not that I really wanna play cyber ping-pong about this, but I think it’s really unfair to compare the best singers and dancers of one group with the worst of another. I could easily say I’ll take Ai’s voice over the horror that is Yoona’s and that Eri is a much better dancer than Fany or something. Probably on the whole, SM (and Kpop in general) puts more emphasis on strong/fierce choreography and showcasing their girls’ vocal talents in their songs than H!P’s parapara dancing and their pop melodies, but as a fan I get annoyed hearing people deny our girls’ talents (whether from Kpop or Jpop) because they do work hard and they are talented and they do provide quality entertainment. :/

I don’t think it’s right to compare Sayu’s voice over Taeyeon’s voice. -_____-. I mean, Sayu is ‘probably; the worst singer in Morning Musume, while, Taeyeon is one of those people in SNSD who has a great voice. But if you compare Taeyeon to Takahashi Ai (the best singer in H!P. In my opinion), I think both of their voices are great but Ai can win by 1%. And really, comparing Aika over Hyoyeon. Hyoyeon is the lead dancer of SNSD, while Aika is just a normal girl in Morning Musume. You should probably compare Eri or Ai (the best dancers in Morning Musume) to Hyoyeon. But still Eri and Ai can dance better than her. I believe that Morning Musume has a great potential in dancing but it can’t just be shown because of the simple choreography. I’m not bashing SNSD or anything, but it’s unfair for comparing Sayu’s voice over Taeyeon’s and Hyoyeon’s/ Yuri’s dancing over Aika’s. FYI, Aika doesn’t wear heels because of an operation in her left foot because she had a detached cartilage. And recently she had been wearing heels shorter than the other girls have, but, unfortunately she had been diagnosed with left ankle bone fracture this May. She can’t dance/ walk for 2 months and she performs while sitting down in a chair in the stage. She still tries her best to dance using her upper body.
Actually I beg to differ… Eri is probably the same level as Hyoyeon, but Hyo definitely has more power than Ai though… And Taeyeon’s voice still is better than Takahashi Ai, both in terms of vocal power AND range. She doesn’t sound as nasally as Takahashi Ai does.

I’m sorry, but I’m sure that Ai is also one of the best dancers in H!P, she would probably be the same level as Hyoyeon if not better. As to the singing, I think Ai and Taeyeon has different ways/charms in singing. In my opinion, Ai is better than Taeyeon in vocal power, if you’ve seen her performance in songs like Manpower, How do you like this Japan?, and others. Considering that she is singing live (It’s not that I;m telling that SNSD is singing live, but most of their performance is kind of not live-ish). As to the vocal range I have to agree that Taeyeon wins. I like SNSD too, I definitely love their songs, I also love Morning Musume very much, but what bothers me is SNSD’s plastic surgery and autotune and lip syncing when they have great voices. :)
jessica is NATURAL!!! the one member of snsd that is 100% natural and everyone assumes that she got plastic surgery!? THERE IS NO JUSTICE IN THIS WORLD! all her features are the SAME! even in pictures of her as a toddler she already has the double eyelids! even today when she laughs really hard her face isn’t super flattering (with amazing hair and makeup)… that is because she is a REAL person who actually LAUGHS because she thinks something is funny. she still has lines under her eyes without makeup these days and her nose has some GREAT and some bad angles.
today jessica’s features still have flaws, but that is what makes her so perfect and uniquely beautiful!

These natural vs plastic debates always tend to be rather tricky.
Although I agree with you about Momusu looking naturally more beautiful, I think your argument is rather poorly put together.
It would be more accurate to compare the members who’ve changed drastically in Momusu to the ones who’ve had drastic changes in SNSD. Like Niigaki, Tsuji (although she’s an OG member), and Reina to a certain extent as well.
As hiro said above, SNSD started training from very early on, and physical appearance can change a lot after puberty. Not to say that they haven’t gotten surgery at all, but comparatively, there are quite a number of Momusu members who’ve changed just as or almost as much.
About parents who would let their child get surgery at a young age, Goto Maki got eyelid surgery prior to her debut, which was when she was only 13.
In the end, these debates end up being pretty nil, since most of the time we can’t really be sure who really got surgery and who didn’t. Debates don’t get very far being so opinion based.
As for AKB48 members getting surgery… I think they’re too poor for that ;P
Besides, if they were to get surgery, they should at least get dental surgery, some of them (and many J-idols in general too) need it badly.

I don’t really get the point. I like both bands, I’ve listened to live performances and both sides can sing pretty well, I thin snsd and mm have their own charm. I like both of them and I think both bands are really good and can sing really well.

I don’t listen to SNSD (or really any K-Pop besides BoA and a few Wonder Girls songs), so my views are based completely on looks, but what I don’t like about the first SNSD picture you posted is that… the girls look too similar. I’m not saying they are the same, but even though each face is pretty, it’s blah BECAUSE they’re all pretty and (as the case usually is for plastic surgery) the surgery looks a little to similar (if it is surgery).
While Momusu, the girls all look beautiful WITHOUT surgery and have their own individual faces.
Again, not saying all the SNSD girls look exactly alike, because they don’t, but their faces aren’t as “individual” as Momusu’s, either by chance or because of surgery I don’t know.
My view is probably biased, yada yada, but still…
I don’t care dude eventhough they are having plastic surgery. I don’t care too about mm that is not having plastic surgery. All i care is thanks for giving me an entertainment.

okay, i think that tiffany, seohyun, sunny, and sooyoung got a LITTLE surgery… but the others really just look like they grew up!!! jessica’s pictures that you CHOOSE to show were bad of course, but it still looks like her just younger and going through puberty… I am a lot prettier now than when I was 12-14 and surgery wasn’t necessary… honestly if you look closely at jessica’s pic.s it the same jaw, forehead, mouth, nose, eyes, everything… just without makeup! as you age you can grow into your features…

well, I remember when jessica first debuted her face was always sweating and she looked tired… now she probably has some face wash for it and she wears makeup at all times… plus I think brown hair without bangs works best with her features… (her eyebrow need to be showing!!!) oh and the one pic. was a bad expression (which everyone has) and her eyebrows were over plucked… i honestly don’t think she had surgery…
but i do think that tiffany and seohyun got a little done on their noses… and maybe sooyoung on her general face shape and nose recently (which is said because she was prettier before it…) and I do find it weird that their are hardly any photos of sunny when younger…
There is no proof that sooyoung didn’t get plastic surgery and no proof that she did but on MTV Girls generation her mum said that fat goes to her cheeks. My personal opinion is that she didn’t get plastic surgery cos if she had, her mum wouldn’t have mentioned it.

I love SNSD.
But just because I love them doesn’t mean I’m going to pretend that none of them have had any work done.
I’m not blind and I don’t lie to myself.
Hyoyeon has definitely had a nose job.
Jessica has definitely had work done on her teeth and lower jaw.
And Tiffany appears to have had work done on her eyes and nose.
There’s more that I could point out but these are the cases in which the evidence is strong.
The rest involve too much speculation.
Does it bother me that they’ve had work done?
No, not really … as long as it’s what they actually wanted and they weren’t pressured into it.
As long as they don’t plan to get married and have kids without first telling their husband about the work they’ve had done, then there’s no harm done.

Even if that became the case that’s not the point. The fact that so many K-pop artists get Plastic Surgery tells the world that they have very little dignity. This goes for everyone who gets Plastic Surgery whether they are famous or not. The fact that MM and most other J-pop are natural is a sign that they are perfectly happy with who they are as people and I’m proud of them. I love both genres equally but I wish K-pop artists were more expressive. I’m not saying that all K-pop artists are fake because that totally untrue but I feel that they give in way too easily to “the man”. I know I haven’t known about her for very long but I have so much respect for Arden Cho because she outright refused to get Plastic Surgery and left the Korean entertainment scene and you know what? People say you are bashing SNSD as stated by several posters, however they fail to analyze it only started because you state how kpop fans say momusu is worse than snsd, and even extending as far going in to talent, when you emphasized how it was clearly on natural looks. Junjun has had 2 blogs of different times, predebut (even before Super Girl auditions in china) w/o makeup and she looks unscathed up to today from then. Okay, okay. I get what you’re trying to do. K-pop fans are notorious for this sort of thing. Take a look at the whole Heavy Rotation backlash. But you’re not going to dissuade them from bashing your beloved idols by bashing their beloved idols. xD
You mentioned that in Korea, plastic surgery is more widely accepted. It’s because the fans are different! It’s possible that fans of K-pop groups actually prefer a more standard, “perfect” look to their idols. Whereas in Japan, wota and other fans like their idols to be cute, but also accessible (I think back to that poll they held recently, where they asked girls on the street which idol group they’d like to join. One girl mentioned that she would like Morning Musume because it’s a group through which any girl can become cute). So naturally they’d go for more of a natural look.
But you had a big flaw in your “argument” (if you can even call it that), that some commenters touched upon. Poor picture choice! Comparing unflattering photos of one group to photoshopped, professionally selected photos of another is a low, unfair jab. Holding up a picture taken on someone’s cell phone and yelling ‘HEY LOOK SHE’S CHANGED A LOT PLASTIC SURGERY’ is not going to get your readers to take you or what you’re saying seriously. Or not seriously, if that was what you were going for. Still, bad photo choice. Junjun has changed drastically in a couple of years. I attribute that to makeup, growing up (you don’t grow into your chin until your late teens), and an increased comfort level around cameras. And all of the members of the current lineup have gone from not-cute-at-all to pretty. With the exception of Tanaka, who has not changed a single hair on her head in years. And Aika, who has regressed to an even more terrifying form.
In the end, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find Tiffany infinitely more attractive than Takahashi and Shige and Gaki combined. But that’s just me, and that fits into what I find attractive. Let the bashers bash, and let them stick to their opinion just as you have stuck to yours.

The point of idols are to be beautiful and entertaining. However, I believe with this element of “plastic” in idols they’ve gone from cute to beyond the normal standards of beautiful.
Though I don’t want to say it, this opinion probably varies per gender. The general consensus is that girls want quirky idols with nice personalities to strive to look like/be like/watch grow up/etc, and guys (SOME not all) just want to look at their breasts. In that case, the plastic surgery is achieving its purpose. AKB48 is an good example (no no, I’m not bringing the AKB/H!P thing into this- leave it be), SEX SELLS (such Pv’s and “Games” as… Well you all know what I’m talking about).
Tsunku chooses “awkward” girls with a characteristic beauty on purpose to make what he believes is an “idol”. But to lots of people idols are just nice pieces of ass who jump around in short skirts and push their boobies together for PB’s.

but you need to write the article better. i don’t know who MM is but from reading your article it seems that they didn’t have plastic surgery before? who knows. only they truly know. makeup can sometimes make it seem as though there has been plastic surgery involved. the only way to truly know is to get an answer out of the person themselves. the ONLY way to compare using pictures the following criteria have to be met:
A) same lighting situation
B) same distance from the camera
C) same pose, straight-on view and profile view
D) no makeup
otherwise picture comparison is invalid.
i do agree that japanese girls tend to be usually naturally better looking than korean girls because MOST of them are born with double eyelids which often gives the impression of more “beautiful”. other than that, most korean girls are born with better overall facial structure (nose, jaw, lips etc) that make a better profile when these features are combined. Because of this makeup tends to look better on korean girls as well, as there is not so much a need for facial contouring (such as nose prominency & jaw line angle as related to chin projection from a profile view). Either way I think both japanese and korean women look similar if you aren’t critically examining. All korean female stars use makeup, and if you use makeup to improve your looks you might as well go for plastic surgery; in the end they fulfill the same thing; improving the looks of a person. All this talk about being [naturally] prettier is quite strange. None of the SNSD fans care. None of the MM fans care. What k-celebs are doing is improving their looks NOW, which is really the only thing that matters, who cares how they were born looking. I mean, looks are only looks- simple as that- there shouldn’t be any image projected because of only looks- it’s the personality, talent, and actions that go with it, and SNSD has it, along with other groups such as Wonder Girls,etc.

Man SNSD fans need to do some research, seriously. Momosu sold over 16 million CDs since there debut while SNSD a bit over a million. You might say that Momosu debuted waaaaay before SNSD but take into consideration that Momosu’s Love Machine (1999) sold a million, which was released 2 years after their debut in 1997. SNSD has yet to sell a single/ album that hits past the 200K mark and they’ve been in the industry for almost 4 years. Yeah, I agree Momosu’s sales recently suck but you can’t disagree that Momosu has not been a household in Japan name for years.

But concerning beauty, its all subjective. No one can deny that either group got plastic surgery done. I just think for Momosu, plastic surgery was done after they graduated, when they’re technically not considered to be part of Momosu anymore.
And for those who say that puberty changes people, Nigaki, Reina, Goto, Sayumi, Tsuji, Kago,Konno, and a few other members debuted 12-14, when girls begin puberty or even before they start for Tsuji and Kago’s case. And up till they left Momusu or some in Morning Musume now, I’d say they look relatively the same. But for SNSD when they debuted, they were well into puberty and would look what they look like when they’ve fully matured. But comparing Into the New World’ SNSD and Run Devil Run’ SNSD are like two totally different groups.

If SNSD have so many fans then in 2007 where CD’s are popular then i would expect their CD sales to beat MM, especially if in 1997 most MM fans probably didnt have a CD player to play the bloody CD on as they were so expensive. Dumb reply, basing popularity on CD sales don’t count as distribution media changes all the time… You need to take into account every media where it has been distributed. In the late 90′s CDs were the standard but in the recent years digital distribution has been the way to go. No clear winner here as SNSD wins in digital distribution while MM wins in CDs…

Plastic Surgery is not a crime. Beauty is not the answer, the answer is the talent and the heart. Going Plastic surgery doesnt mean that you’re TOTALLY FAKE. It just means you want to change a few features.

I don’t think you have the right to judge SNSD girls from just those photos. Everyone has bad photos, and you just happen(in Jessica’s photos) taken one where she has her eyes half closed, where she’s not looking at the camera, and what are those, braces? They have plenty of beautiful childhood photos, much more than the not as flattering ones, but the antis always choose the unpleasant ones just to prove their point. I don’t believe your favorited Japanese girl group is any better looking than the SNSD members themselves, matter of fact, some of them aren’t even as eye catching. I’m pretty sure, they have embarrassingly horrifying photos as a kid, we all do, but they don’t determine who we are and what we look like today. Korea might be known for its plastic surgery, but it does not mean every other girl group has had done something to their faces. Ofcourse Momsu is better, when people say that SNSD has natural beauty, it’s mostly because their makeup artists make it look like their not wearing any makeup when they really are. Honestly if you take all the makeup, the lights, the heels, the clothes and the accesories from them, they’d look like average everyday girls. If you take away the lighting,first of all, you’ll see that their not white! Their legs, for some of them looks so unhealthy and sickly. I like this article, I think you’re just speaking your truthful opinion and some people (mainly Sones from what I see) are taking it way too seriously. I think most of them missed the part where you were only defending Morning Musume, because some Sones called them plastic too, and assumed you only made the article to say ‘Morning Musume is prettier than SNSD’. Which you weren’t. In fact, some of these comments I see make wonder if some of the people reading this even know who Morning Musume are and only just commented just to defend SNSD without knowing the real reason behind this article.
I try to be as unbiased as possible, because I like SNSD, but I like Morning Musume better than SNSD. But, we can’t deny that the SNSD girls didn’t get plastic surgery, because they obviously did. Some may say that it’s puberty, but come on. Look at Jessica and Tiffany. Your face doesn’t drastically change like that because of puberty (or makeup or working out), the human body doesn’t work that way. I’m not saying they all got surgery (because Seohyun, Yuri, and Hyoyeon look almost the same then as they do now), but we can’t deny that some of them did. Is it wrong to have plastic surgery? Not at all, it’s their choice. As for Morning Musume, it really is obvious that they’ve never had plastic surgery. By the way, about Goto Maki having work done, the same thing about plastic surgery applies to her. Although, I don’t think she had work done while she was in Morning Musume.
I also saw someone compare the members to each other. Why would you compare Taeyeon (who has great vocal skills and is the leader of SNSD) to Sayumi (who has admitted that her voice isn’t good) and Aika? That’s kind of a sneaky way to get your point through. Why don’t you compare her to Ai (the leader of Morning Musume and an equally great singer) or Risa (who has a voice that can blow you away sometimes) and then compare Yoona to Sayumi or Aika. Morning Musume isn’t doing great right now, I admit. But, you can’t deny that they’re a great group, like SNSD is. SNSD has not had plastic surgery, maybe botox or something but not plastic surgery, as mm has had it done. i am a mm fan (not so much as other but still) i just found out about them a year ago. and btw SNSD are also known well around the world infact a lot of people at the school i go to know of them and love them. one of the diffrences between mm and snsd is when some people hear mm they dont like them but when they hear snsd they dont like them either but snsd grows on people i know im one of those people and so is my best friend. my friend refuses to listen to mm though. and another thing yoona is pretty much the only person in snsd that cant sing that well but her voice is getting stronger. now in case u mention hyoyeon shes got a diffrent voice but its rele nice to listen to…
For a Morning Musume fan, you sure are very SNSD biased. A lot of Sones have accepted the fact that some of SNSD have had plastic surgery, so why are you in denial? That’s what most idols do in KPop, have plastic surgery. And, does Morning Musume look like they’ve had plastic surgery to you? All the girls look almost exactly like they have since they were pre-teens, unlike some of SNSD. Morning Musume is also known worldwide, longer than SNSD has been, and grows on you too. You and your friend are just two people, some people prefer Momosu and some prefer SNSD. I didn’t like SNSD at first, but they grew on me and now I do.

Some people have single eye lid when they were young, but as they grow they have double eye lids etc. In this world there may be many cases of looking ugly young and beautiful when adult. Okay, we get it. You think that SNSD isn’t as naturally beautiful as MM. I’m perfectly fine with that statement at its core. However, the way you dressed that statement in this article is rather haughty, pompous, distasteful, and would make quite a few more people speak with objection than you might like. I am one of them.
I usually do not take the time to make such comments like this, but I feel that I must make remarks about the way your language is presented. Being blunt is perfectly fine; as a matter of fact, I am extraordinarily blunt with many people. However, I (hopefully) know the difference between “blunt” and “offensive.” It does not matter to the unbiased reader that you stated you are indeed a K-pop fan, for your descriptions of some of these women are unforgiving. Passion and loaded words not only brings gusto to your argument, but also delivers unnecessary hostility that you may not enjoy. Does the first paragraph I wrote deliver a rather painful jab? That’s only mildly aggressive language; I haven’t yet succumbed to pure insults yet. It disappoints me that you must use them in order to elevate your thesis, for I think many more people (including me) would be much more receptive to it if it weren’t for the way you wrote about it.
Sir or madam, let me tell you that almost no one likes reading words that offend a particular group. The only occasions on which this statement is voided are probably when one speaks of the Nazis or Communists. When I read your descriptions of the SNSD girls, I felt as if those words were cutting enough to hurt me. I am a girl. I am around the age of these young women. A landslide of women around my age are very sensitive about their physical image, and even though the comments you made are not directed towards your audience, those who fall into my category are probably somewhat hurt by what they read here. It’s fine if you think that pre-debut SNSD wasn’t as beautiful as pre-debut MM, but putting up pictures of women who have a healthy body image and assaulting their appearance is very damaging to girls who may have feel uncomfortable with their own body images. I have seen people who felt the pressures of looking beautiful and nearly ruined themselves by absorbing criticism about perfectly fine looking women and turning it on themselves. If you must make an argument about these women’s body images, don’t do it like this. It hurts.

And why does everyone talk about appearances that much these days? Everyone should really focus on talents, dancing skills, singing skills, and etc.
Face the facts:
1. SNSD Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny, and Tiffany sings so much better than Momusu.
2. SNSD Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, and Yuri dance better than Momusu.
3. Yoona and Seohyun looks like the world’s beauties compared to Momusu. (They didn’t get surgeries.)
I am NOT hating on Momusu, and I like some of their songs, but you shouldn’t really compare Jpop to Kpop. Kpop beats their heads right off.
I think you should face the facts and stop being in denial. You can’t bring up Jessica, Tiffany, or even Taeyeon, because Ai and Risa can do things with their voices that I don’t think even Taeyeon can do. Sunny’s voice can’t rival Reina’s. First of all, I personally don’t think you can even compare SNSD to Morning Musume! They are two totally different categories! I DO think that Morning Musume is MUCH more superior to SNSD in everyway! I have been a fan of both groups for a long time! But I started to disslike SNSD after a while, when I realized they are just a massproduced crap, who want to make money and fame, whislt Morning Musume is in my opinion more natural and want to entartain people. But ofcourse that depends on how you see things.

For example, how does SNSD sound live?! They’re a TOTAL MESS! I mean, almost NONE of them can even hit a tone right(besides two or three of them). Everyone’s blowing their top over this article when it isn’t THAT bad. Honestly, did you guys (I’m talking to the Sones) even notice that Jin called Sayumi a bitch and Aika ugly? But, talent-wise, Momusu is better. Here are the reasons why that is:
*They sing live more than SNSD (Don’t deny it, Sones. They do. YouTube it.)
*All of them can sing well (See the recent performances, even the 9th gen have improved)
*All of them can dance well (With the exception of the new members, Kanon and Erina)
*They have better and more complicated dances (As a dancer, I’ve found that SNSD’s dances are easier to do than Momusu’s)
*Momusu is more original
Here are the reasons SNSD is doing better, popularity-wise:
*Flashy, sexy/cute, concept
*Better music videos (SNSD’s MVs are made better and are more high-tech)
*Better outfits
*Better beat in their songs (Gee, Oh!, RDR, and Mr. Taxi were extremely catchy…although they were all almost alike in beat)
*Their look (There’s a lot of emphasis on SNSD’s looks, especially their legs. This attracts fans of both sexes)
*All-in-all: Visual appeal
If Tsunku did more with Momusu, I believe they could rise above SNSD’s popularity. But, why am I trying to make my point? My opinion will only be attacked. But whatever, I had to say it .__.

To make it clear, I am neither a fan of both groups. I, honestly, never heard of Morning Musume until I read your blog. Googled it accidentally! ;b I also just recently known SNSD for a few months, like some of their songs. I am neither Korean nor Japanese. Just a random netizen who accidentally found and read this blog.
A strong note I have put for myself is that I have to be very thorough and clear when writing out my comments.
Point 1 – plastic surgery
Whether or not, each member of each group had done it or not, no living human being will ever know the whole truth, except for God, the subjects themselves, their production companies, their families and friends who maybe they have shared their personal secrets with, AND the plastic surgeons and nurses (if they did it, the surgeons would’ve known for sure and vice versa).
In my opinion, these girls are entertainers and it is their, I’d say, obligations to look good at all times. Let’s say they had surgeries, be it. They’re fine with that, so why should other people put such strong objection to that? It’s their lives, the can do anything they want as long as it’s legal. Probably, it even wasn’t their decisions to do so. They debuted at young age, too young to afford any cosmetic surgeries. I’d say it’s the decision of the company and the parents, because them being minor and illegal to sign any contract. If you want to be famous, there are sacrifices that need to be made, whatever they are.
Point 2 – best sellers
Back then, CDs were the new stuff, and now, people buy albums from iTunes and stuff like that. CDs are kinda old school, don’t ya think?
If I read it correctly, MM debuted in late 90s? If, until now, they’re still able to sell a lot of albums, then one surely can’t underestimate their popularity. Even those Hollywood stars, don’t last forever; Britney Spears was the queen of pop, and now she’s been replaced by Gaga (again, pros and cons on her). Even S. Korea had their late 90s girl group that was very famous then, right? How are they doing now? Are they still as famous as then? Maybe back then, it’s JPop era and maybe now it’s KPop era, or vice versa. Every thing has its own lifecycle. If MM still manage to survive after more than 10 years debuting, though not as famous as they used to be, then we should give them credit. Lets see how SNSD is doing after more than 10 years debuting? Then, it’s only fair to compare.
Also to be fair, to compare, you have to put into consideration, the music genre and style, what type of music is famous during certain year, the percentages of people who like MM’s music style and SNSD’s, diff year might give diff percentage. Otherwise, all other statements are bias.
point 3 – ‘Famed by rumors’
I believe that, both groups are in constant gratitude to all of you fans and anti fans. The rumors, bashing each others idol, bias comments, etc etc, are what made them more famous than ever. People who aren’t familiar with these groups, once they read this blog for sure, will start doing research about their biographies and songs. What’s so good about them that make people sending somewhat inappropriate comments other people who they might not even know? They wouldn’t exist without all of you.

At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter if they had work done. I think most entertainers who live and die by not just their talent, but their looks and public persona have had something done. But if you made your living by the way you look, and if you felt strongly that a $5000 nose-straightening job will pay back $500,000 in additional commercial jobs or magazine cover shots, I’d say “get my checkbook!” These entertainers have a shelf-life and they’ve got to do all they can to get what they can, while they can. And if they want to plunk down the $$ to improve themselves, then let them–it’s a free world (mostly). If you get entertainment value from MM’s or SNSD’s music/entertainment, then just appreciate it for what it is. If you don’t like it, or don’t like the way they look, smell, whatever–then voice your protest by not dropping a dime on their CDs, DVDs, etc.
Who care if they did plastic surgery?

I completely agree that most of them have had plastic (and are still touching up every now and then), but the comparison between both photos are pretty unfair.
For one, the debut photo was an interview shot compared to a photoshopped photoshoot.
Also, when they debuted, they had really little makeup on and honestly makeup does a shit load of difference to your face.

I LOVE both SNSD and Momusu , I truly do. And I won’t pick sides either. They each have their own flaws, different styles, and different ways of doing things. They are both popular , and have a big fanbase [I seriously wished we didn't have to choose between Momusu and SNSD ... *heartbroken*]
Momusu is very pretty. I don’t know if any of them have gotten plastic surgery , but I don’t think they did. Besides, in S. Korea , it seems normal to have plastic surgery.

From my common knowledge and what I know of any media (whether it’s K-Pop, J-Pop, American, British) it’s not right to be talking about these girls and comparing them. Your article is very biased. Girls’ Generation have not got surgery, and even if they have, it’s better to have surgery than not. Jessica is stereotyped as bitch, I’ll give you that. Morning Musume are always saying bad things about people, but I’ve never seen SNSD be cruel. SNSD have talent, why Morning Musume rely on autotune. Autotune is good for changing pitch, yet can’t hide strength, or lack of strength, in your voice. I have never once seen either group lip sync, except once when SNSD sound system was broken. There is proof all of the internet of both groups. SNSD do have better natural beauty, in my opinion. Just because they put a little effort in doesn’t make them trashy. Girls’ Generation do work on their weight, while Morning Musume are, I’m not being mean, fat. Girls’ Generation wear makeup, but so do most people. I can’t honestly say that Morning Musume are the better dancers. If they put more effort in they could be better than SNSD, and I’d love to see it. I think Morning Musume have better music videos, and their songs are better. SNSD’s videos are often unrelated to the song, or the scenes are unrelated. They could both take good points from each other.
