Berryz Kobo – Otakebi Boy WAO! / Tomodachi wa Tomodachi Nanda!

Tsunku blesses the girls with once again another double a-side single. Actually, it’s VERY similar to the previous single in that it has a wacky, anime -tie in song and a more typical H!P style song.

The main focus of the single however is Otakebi Boy WAO!. While it doesn’t have the wtf-ness of Ryuusei Boy, the “owa WAO” lines alone are pretty surprising. I love how intense and exciting this song is with it’s electric guitars, Tsunku screams and rapid vocals. Add on top of that an old-school Berryz sound, a very catchy chorus and just to keep it all normal, Miyabi/Momoko/Risako centers. It’s these types of songs that I wish C-ute could continue to do again(of course, less wacky and more serious). Oh, and Momoko gets one more line than Miyabi. Wtf is that?

The b-side other a-side is Tomodachi wa Tomodachi Nanda!. Unlike anything we’ve heard Berryz do before, it’s got that brass heavy, fresh pop sound typical of H!P b-sides but without the b-side quality, which is pretty interesting. I thought it was the perfect contrast to the other insane a-side, although it’s not the best Berryz song out there.

It’s about time Tsunku switched up the double a-side formula with the girls. It’s proven to perform well in sales, but it’s getting stale. A-sides like Otakebi Boy WAO! and Ryuusei Boy are the ones I would love to always see Berryz release in the future, it suits them so well.

Otakebi Boy WAO! / Tomodachi wa Tomodachi Nanda! is Berryz Kobo’s 22nd single and it was released on March 3, 2010. It reached #3 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and has sold 25,197 copies.
