BEAST – BEAST is the B2ST

Many say that BEAST is the male version of 4minute and it’s sort of true. Both groups are from the same company and share a ton of similarities in their musical style. That fusion of pop and electro that K-Pop is known for but with that Cube Entertainment twist: TONS of vocoder.

While I much prefer 4minute’s music, BEAST can definitely hold their own. They show a lot of sides in this album. Their more serious tracks are Mystery and BEAST is the B2ST. The latter, an intro, is an anti-climatic song and while it does leave you at a good cliffhanger, it just isn’t very interesting and just drags on. The former is a darker electronic song although it has high-pitched synth. I think it’s nice, but nothing more. It’s missing something that either makes or breaks a K-Pop song, and that’s a catchy hook. Sure while the “mystery” line in the chorus is something, it’s lack any originality.

Of course the title track of the album is the best song. Bad Girl is something you don’t get too much in K-Pop these days from boy groups. No, don’t even think for a second that it isn’t synth pop, instead is that it isn’t a dark/serious song, but instead a more carefree and almost cute approach to pop. I honestly think they pulled off a great, catchy and fresh tune.

The last two songs of the album contrast the first half very nicely. Yet is an interesting mixture between a slow acoustic song and a modern R&B sound. I like how relaxed and laid-back it is since it is the opposite of the two previous track’s explosive instrumentals. Oasis is actually REALLY similar to Yet. In fact, I’d say they use practically the same instruments but in different arrangements. Again, it’s a good contrast to the other songs but way to similar to the previous track.

BEAST’s debut was definitely interesting. They got the variety down and displayed various styles that they could focus on in the future but I think it’s up to Cube to give these boys some better instrumentals.
